Threads of Belonging – Research Project and Vintage Tartan and Highlandwear

The tartans of the Macphersons – researched, reinterpreted, reconnected

A research-led exploration of tartan as history, belonging, and identity.

Threads of Belonging is an ongoing research project dedicated to uncovering, documenting, and reinterpreting the tartans associated with the Macpherson name.

Rooted in history but open to discovery, the project looks beyond simplified narratives to explore how tartans emerge—through tradition, adaptation, memory, and meaning.

The Archive of Belonging is a living archive of Macpherson tartans – a catalogue of Macpherson tartan pieces in existence today. It records and archives pieces of tartan that members of the clan have, wear and cherish. You can see behind the scenes on the project’s Instagram account.

Threads of Belonging began as a research project – an exploration into the layered history, identity, and evolution of Macpherson tartans. As the research progressed I started to track down tartan items for sale. The collection grew, and I’m able to offer some items for sale. I am able to carry out some alteration work, and each item is listed with suggestions for alterations that might be possible. You can find the shop of vintage tartan and Highlandwear pieces here.

If you are looking for a particular item and would like to discuss bespoke sourcing of items, I source specific Highlandwear and vintage garments on commission. Whether you’re looking for a kilt, tweed jacket, or a particular cloth, I use my expertise to find pieces that meet your requirements for quality, fit, and style. Items can be assessed, adjusted, and prepared for wear as part of the service.

Through working on this project I became interested in kiltmaking, and am now training as a kiltmaker with Paula Duncan in Llhanbryde, in Moray on the north coast of Scotland. This is a slow and laborious process that puts my research into practice. If you’d like to commission a kilt, or have an heirloom that is in need of alteration or mending please get in touch.
